I adopted Molly (nee Malanena) from the Naperville (Illinois) Humane Society. Malanena is misspelled Spanish for "Bad girl" (Mala Niña), although they were pronouncing it "mah-LAYN-na." I renamed her Molly.
She's a 7 year old Calico DSH (born 1998). She was just spayed the week before I adopted her. She had been in heat and had been grumpy with some of the shelter volunteers. She's grumpy with Basil, hissing and growling. Basil doesn't know what to make of her yet.
Interesting recent development: Molly has been slowly warming up to Basil. Suddenly when gooshy food was being served, Molly started acting as if Basil was a rock star and she was a groupie. When I served Basil his gooshy food (Waltham LP), Molly ate almost all of his food and then followed him around demanding more. Basil seems a little unnerved by all of Molly's attention.
Molly has also taken possession of Basil's little cat bed that sits on the corner unit of the L shaped couch. I may have to get another cat bed of some sort. Molly likes to hide, so maybe I should get a box-bed that she can hide in?
At the moment, both cats are napping together on the floor near me. They'll nap within a few inches of each other but Molly seems to be the alpha-cat and tries to beat up or play with Basil.
Molly is my first female cat and the first female pet I had since my dog died in '92. Sometimes the way she carries on makes me think she's a diva or drama queen.
When I adopted her in July, 2005, Molly weighed less than seven pounds. Now, two months later, she's up to about ten pounds.
She seems to have stabilized at about 10.5 to 11 pounds.
May, 2006: Molly likes the Lean Treats brand of cat treats, so I'm conditioning her to associate "snack" with the treats.
February, 2007: Molly is happy, healthy and still bugs Basil.
May, 2007: Since Molly is a senior cat, she received her first semiannual wellness exam at the Vet's. Her weight is 10.5 pounds and her thyroid level is slightly elevated. Otherwise, she is healthy.
November, 2007: Molly got another semiannual wellness exam. Weight is 9.9 pounds. She's healthy. She's quite nutz too. She loves her cat toys - she'll wake at 3 AM to play with the toys.
April, 2008: Molly received her semiannual wellness exam. Weight is 9.6 pounds. Her blood-work showed her Creatinine level at 2.4 (normal range is 0.8-2.3), so she may be in early-stage CRF (Chronic Renal Failure). However, her BP (Blood Pressure) and UA (Urine Analysis) are normal, so she doen't need to be medicated. Everything else is normal. We'll have to watch this. I should get her blood-work done again in 1-2 months.
